Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a family of small, double-stranded DNA viruses that infect the skin and mucous membranes. More than 200 types exist, grouped into low-risk strains (typically causing benign warts) and high-risk strains linked to cervical cancer.
High-risk HPV can persist quietly for years; during that time, it may trigger precancerous changes that can progress to cancer if not detected. Routine molecular screening that flag persistent high-risk HPV is essential for assessing cancer risk and guiding timely follow-up or treatment.
HPV-16 & HPV-18 are the most recognized HPV strains for causing genital cancer. SimplyTest does not detect types of HPV that are not considered high-risk for cancer development.
